IPG not only seeks to encourage more women participation in governance, but also to enhance the skills of women who are already serving in government. Recognizing the achievements of women also works to inspire other women to follow suit. An empowered women sector will also ensure that policies and budgets will take into account their needs and demands. Women government officials and organizations banding together will likewise help in spreading good “women in governance” practices around the country.
From 2015 to 2011, IPG awarded the Bayi Exemplary Women Leadership in Politics and Governance to honor outstanding women in government and Bayi Centennial Awards for women with valuable contributions to the promotion, protection and development of women’s rights in the Philippines. Recipients of the Bayi award includes Leticia Shahani, Santanina Rasul, Che Che Lazaro, Etta Rosales, Leila de Lima, Heidi Yorac, Vilma Santos, Leonor Briones, Risa Hontiveros, Aida Santos, Maita Gomez, Grace Padaca, Emilia Boncodin, Bayang Barrios, Guy Claudio, Susan Fernandez, Marides Fernando, Carolyn Sobritchea, and Princess Nemenzo. In 2013, the Bayi award evolved to Bayi Academy — a capacity building and mentoring for women leaders (both in local government units and civil society organizations).
For 2017-2022, IPG will continue to promote women in politics and governance through the following:
